Genesis Metro Theme and bbPress Project

Yeah I know it’s been a while but I’ve been seriously busy. You believe me right? So, neglecting my personal blog always seems to be first on the hit list. Well something has to give doesn’t it?

Anyway my wife recently said that she wanted to start studding our English Bulldog and he would need a website for his services and possibly puppies if we go the breeding route. What would an internet marketing connoisseur do? That’s right jump off the deep end! So I’m working on a site all about Bulldogs to include a classifieds site for a fee.

I’m a Genesis fan that’s right I love it! I selected the Genesis Metro Child Theme for this project because it just seemed to flow well with little customizing effort. I made very minimum changes to this template; the wrap width, google banner ad and footer credits color. I’m sure additional changes will occur it’s still in the beginning stages right now. So, I will definitely be updating this post when they occur!

On another note are your considering the the Metro Theme?  If so you may want to also check out the Pro-Plus package as you get 40+ themes and every theme Studiopress makes for life! This is the option I went with so when new projects come up I have plenty of themes available to choose from.

Metro Tweaks

Find the code below in your style.css login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Style sheet. Note I’ve set my width to 975px.

#wrap {
 background-color: #fff;
 margin: 32px auto;
 margin: 2rem auto;
 max-width: 975px;
 overflow: hidden;
}

Find the code below in your style.css login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Style sheet. Note I’ve set my color to #333 to match my background image.

#footer {
 background-color: #333;
 clear: both;
 overflow: hidden;
 padding: 8px 0;
 padding: 0.5rem 0;
}

Google Ad Banner

I’m sure there are many methods to getting the google adsense 728×90 banner ad placed in the header beside the text made logo. Here’s the method I came up with that worked for me.  Step 1: Find the code below in your style.css login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Style sheet. Add .sidebar after #header.

#header .widget-area {
width: 31.111111111%; /* 336px / 1080px */
}

Step 2: Find the code below in your style.css login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Style sheet. Change #title-area to #content.

#title-area {
width: 65.555555555%; /* 708px / 1080px */
}

Forum aka Classifieds

The classifieds aka forum I used the bbPress plugin. The bbPress plugin is forum software with a twist from the creators of WordPress. You can easily setup discussion forums inside your WordPress.org powered site. Initially I thought a forum was what I needed but later decided that it should be a classified page. To change it from a forum to classified I just changed the name.

User Registration

The user registration and PayPal integration was a little tricky but I ended up using Gravity Forms  plugin add-ons PayPal Add-On & User Registration Add-On. These add-ons are apart of the developer license.  After a user pays for the subscription I wanted the registration to auto hide when logged in to do this I used the Widget Logic plugin.  After you install the plugin it adds a widget logic box to your widgets.  In the registration box put this code: !is_user_logged_in()

Rename bbPress Forum

Copy the code below into functions.php. login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Theme Functions.

// Change bbPress Forum title to Classifieds
add_filter('gettext', 'change_bbpress_wording', 10, 3);
add_filter('ngettext', 'change_bbpress_wording', 10, 3);
add_filter('gettext_with_context', 'change_bbpress_wording', 10, 3);
function change_bbpress_wording ($translated, $untranslated, $domain) {
 if ($domain == 'bbpress') {
 $translated = str_ireplace('Forum', 'Classified', $translated );
 $translated = str_ireplace('Topic', 'Classified', $translated );
 $translated = str_ireplace('Reply', 'Classified', $translated );
 }
 return $translated;
}

Remove bbPress Search

Copy the code below into style.css to remove search from the header. login >> WordPress >> Dashboard >> Editor >> Style sheet.

/* Removes search from bbPress header ----------- */
.bbp-search-form {
display:none !important;
}

bbPress Plugins: Add-Ons
